Session

The slow hour

A 60-minute session at the slowest rhythm I work, in low light, for the evenings you most need to wind down.

Same covered, bare-handed Swedish strokes, only slower and with pauses between them. I dim the room, offer lavender, citrus or no scent in the air, and never put a scent on your skin. When the hour is up, you can stay on the table for a few minutes.

What happens

In the room

  1. 01

    Step 1: Settle in

A short check-in, then the lights go low and the room is quiet.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Slow strokes

Long, slow strokes at light to medium pressure, with pauses.

  3. 03

    Step 3: Rest

A few minutes of stillness before the last strokes.

  4. 04

    Step 4: Get up slowly

Water, a minute to sit up and no rush to leave.

Good to know

Pressure, cover and what to wear

  • Pressure

Light to medium by default, and I follow your lead if you want more or less.

  • Covered

You are covered by a sheet or towel the whole time. Only the part I am working on is uncovered, and it is covered again when I move on.

  • Ask your doctor first

If you are pregnant or unsure whether massage suits you right now, ask your doctor or midwife first.

  • What to wear

Undress to your comfort. You are covered by a sheet or towel the whole time.

Who does it

One therapist, every session

Merlene holds a Florida massage therapist license and does every session herself.

  • Merlene Bartley in a sage-green tunic, smiling and folding towels beside the treatment table

    Merlene Bartley

    Licensed massage therapist and owner

    • Massage Therapist License · FL Lic. 000000

Merlene is the only therapist at Settle, so you see her at every visit. She keeps the room quiet and the pace unhurried, and she takes the evening appointments for people who work evenings. She speaks English.

Questions

About the slow hour

Is the slow hour different from Swedish?

The strokes are the same. The rhythm is slower and the room is quieter, with the lights low.

Do you use scents?

Lavender, citrus or nothing, in the air of the room only. Tell me if you would rather have none.

Can I fall asleep?

Plenty of people do. I wake you gently when the time is up.
